Arrest

On 5/4/2024, The Lyon County Sheriff's Office received a report of on abuse situation at the Avera Hospital in Rock Rapids. Upon investigation, Paula Harms of George, was arrested for Dependent Adult Abuse and OWI first offense. (SW)

ACCIDENT

May 2, 2024, at 7:00 AM, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle accident near the intersection of Beech Avenue and 180th Street. Tyler J. Johnson (23) of Madison, SD was operating a 2019 Kia Optima East bound and struck a deer that entered the roadway. Approximately $4000 dollars in damage was estimated to the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

Arrest

On 5/2/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Christian Lile, 18, of Steen, MN, on an arrest warrant from Cerro Gordo County, IA. The warrant was for failure to appear on the original charge of Theft 5th Degree. Lile was transported to the Lyon County Jail where he posted a $300 cash bond and was released with a court date.

On 4/28/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Lennon Slade, of Rock Rapids, for domestic abuse assault, an aggravated misdemeanor. Slade was transported to the Lyon County Jail.

On 4/27/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Kaylee Dandurand, of Larchwood, on a Lyon County warrant for failure to appear. Dandurand was transported to the Lyon County Jail. 

Arrest

On 4/24/24, shortly after 7:00pm the Lyon County Sheriff's Office took a report of a speeding motorist along Geiser Street in the city limits of Larchwood. Upon investigation, Jeremy Jay Underberg, age 46 of Larchwood, was arrested and charged with Operation while Intoxicated 2nd Offense, a aggravated misdemeanor. Underberg was transported to the Lyon County Jail and held on a $2,000 bond. (sw)

On 4/26/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Harold Hasche of Rock Rapids for Driving While Barred, an aggravated misdemeanor, and Driving While Suspended, a simple misdemeanor. Hasche was transported to the Lyon County Jail and released after posting bond.

On 4/26/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Danielle Slaughter of Sioux Falls, SD, on an arrest warrant from Polk County, IA. The warrant was for Domestic Abuse Assault-Strangulation. Slaughter was transported to the Lyon County Jail before being turned over to Polk County. 

ARREST

On 04/23/2024, Andrew Permann [39] was arrested on an outstanding warrant for violation of probation. He is being held at the Lyon County Jail with a bond of $2,000 cash or surety.

CHARGES

On Saturday April 20, 2024, at approximately 11:07 AM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office received a call of a domestic disturbance at a residence in Larchwood, IA.  As a result Tanner Michael Kamm, age 27, and Alexys Jennifer Flann, age 28, both from Larchwood were charged with the following:

Ms. Flann: Child Endangerment, a class D Felony; possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

Mr. Kamm: Child Endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor; possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

ARREST

On 4/16/24, around 01:30am, Lyon County Deputies responded to a report of domestic disturbance in the 600 block of S 3rd Ave in Rock Rapids. Upon Investigation, Seth Joseph Roos, age 34, of Rock Rapids was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Causing Bodily Injury 1st Offense, a Serious Misdemeanor. Roos was then transported to the Lyon County Jail and booked. Roos is being held on a $1,000 bond.

ARREST

On April 16th, 2024, a Lyon County Deputy arrested Derek Wayne Vining, age 31, of Brandon on his active warrant for Failure to Appear. Vining was transported from the Minnehaha County Jail to the Lyon County Jail where he sit with a $5,000 bond. (CB)

ACCIDENT

Monday, April 15, 2024, at 06:16 am., the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office investigated a one vehicle accident near the intersection of Beech Avenue and 180th Street. Samuel R. Mayasich, age 31, of Sioux Falls, SD was operating a 2023 BMW eastbound on 180th Street and struck a deer that entered the roadway. Damage caused to the vehicle was estimated at $6000.00 dollars damage. No injuries were reported.

ARRESTS MADE

On April 13, 2024 Lyon County Deputies arrested Michael Smoot of Sioux Falls for Supplying Alcohol to Person Under Legal Age, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Prohibited Destructive Acts, Parks and Public Lands- Closing Time Exceeded, Failure to provide Proof of Financial Liability, and Failure to Display Registration Plate. Smoot was cited to appear in court and released.

On April 12, 2024 Lyon County Deputies arrested Mason Sanborn of Sioux Falls for Possession of Controlled Substance- Marijuana 1st Offense, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Alcohol by Person Under 21 1st offense, and Parks and Public Lands. Sanborn was housed in the Lyon County Jail.

On April 12, 2024 Lyon County Deputies arrested Kaeden Jacobson of Sioux Falls for Possession of Controlled Substance- Marijuana 1st offense, Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Offense, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of alcohol by person under 21 1st Offense, and Parks and Public Lands- Closing Time Exceeded. Jacobson was housed in the Lyon County Jail.

On April 9, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Amanda McDonald on an active Lyon County Warrant for Failure to Appear. She was lodged in the Lyon County Jail.

On April 9, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Nathan Palaschak on active warrants from the state of Minnesota. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office charged Palaschak with Fugitive of Justice, and he was lodged in the Lyon County Jail.

Arrests

On 4/8/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Steven Heinemann, 36, of Inwood, for Driving While Revoked-serious misdemeanor, and 2 different counts of Driving While Suspended-simple misdemeanors. Additionally, Leslie Newman, 39, of Inwood, was arrested on a Sioux County warrant for Violation of Probation. Both Heinemann and Newman were transported to the Lyon County Jail. 

ARREST

On Saturday April 6, 2024 at approximately 3:48 AM a Deputy came upon a man walking on Highway 9 near the Grand Falls Casino and Resort.  The Deputy checked on the man's wellbeing who was lost.  The man was identified as David Yak, age 21, from Kansas City, MO and was found to be in possession of a THC vape.  Mr. Yak was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor. SEMI ACCIDENT

On April 1, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle roll over at the intersection of 120th Street and Marsh Avenue North of Little Rock. William A. Murray (49) of Jackson, MN was operating a tractor/trailer owned by New Fashion Pork and was attempting to make a right turn at the intersection.  While making a wide turn, the front wheel of the semi got to close to the edge and was sucked into the ditch causing both units to overturn in the ditch. Murray was transported to Sibley hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Damage to both units is unknown at this time. Assisting the sheriff’s office was Little Rock Fire and Rescue And Iowa DNR.  (LS)

Warrant Arrest

On April 4, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Alvin Carlton Jr. on an active Lyon County Warrant for Violation of Probation. It was discovered that Carlton Jr. had an active warrant through the State of Florida and was charged with Fugitive of Justice.  He was lodged in the Lyon County Jail.

On April 3, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Devin Groeneweg on an active Lyon County Warrant for Failure to Appear. He was lodged in the Lyon County Jail.

ACCIDENT

On 4/1/24, multiple Lyon County Deputies responded to a two vehicle rollover accident at the intersection of 230th and Marsh Ave with unknown injuries. Upon investigation, it was determined that Maximus Jones, age 20, of Lake Park was driving his 2008 Chevrolet Silverado Southbound on Marsh Ave and failed to stop at the stop sign, which resulted with Katrina Riemersma, age 45 of Ashton, driving a 2019 Chevrolet Trax while traveling Eastbound on 230th attempted to avoid the Silverado before striking the passenger side. The Silverado rolled over and ended up on its passenger side and the Trax ended in the SE Field. In total, 3 occupants were taken to Sanford Sheldon for medical treatment via Lyon County Ambulance and George Ambulance. Jones is cited for Failure to Obey Stop Sign and Failure to wear Seat Belt. Both vehicles appeared to received totaling damage. Assisting at the scene was George Fire, George EMS, Lyon County Ambulance and The Tow Co. (TB)

Accident

On March 30, 2024 the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a two-vehicle accident in the 1200 block of 180th St. Investigation at the scene determined that Jaydrien Albers of Sheldon was operating her 2018 grey impala going west bound on 160th St. Mathias Knoblock of Rock Rapids was operating his 2012 ford f350 making a left had turn out of a private drive way to head east on 180th St. The two vehicles both made evasive action and made head on collision. Knoblock was charged with failure to yield upon entering through highway. Assisting at the scene was the Lyon County Ambulance, Lester Rescue, Lester Fire Department, and Trackside Towing. (SW)

Accident/Arrest

On 3/25/2024,  the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 2-vehicle, hit and run accident, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 75 and County Road A52, outside of Doon. Investigation at the scene determined Jennifer Van Otterloo of Sanborn was operating her 2014 Chevrolet Traverse southbound on U.S. 75. Bagner Cruz Sanchez, of Maurice, was operating a 2014 Chevrolet Captiva owned by Francisco Zavala, also southbound on U.S. Highway 75. Cruz Sanchez’s vehicle rear-ended Van Otterloo’s vehicle. Cruz Sanchez then left the scene. Cruz Sanchez was located a short time later. Cruz Sanchez was charged as follows:

Cruz Sanchez was lodged in the Lyon County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Rock Valley Police Department and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office. No injuries were reported. (SW)

Arrest

On March 31, 2024 Deputies arrested Jorge Arturo Padilla Tavares on two active Lyon County Warrants both for Failure to Appear. Padilla Tavares also received two new charges for operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license, and not having an ignition interlock while operating a motor vehicle. He was transported to the Lyon County Jail where he was then released on bond. (SW)

Accident

On March 30, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a two-vehicle accident in the 2400 block of 180th St. Investigation at the scene determined that Jaydrien Albers of Sheldon was operating her 2018 Chevy Impala going west bound on 180th St. Mathias Knoblock of Rock Rapids was operating a 2012 Ford F350 belonging to JRT Farms making a left hand turn out of a private driveway onto 180th St. The two vehicles both made evasive action and collided in the east bound lane. Knoblock was charged with Failure to Yield Upon Entering Through Highway. Assisting at the scene was the Lyon County Ambulance, Lester Rescue, Lester Fire Department, and Trackside Towing.

DRUG ARREST MADE

On 3/23/24, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office was requested for assistance at the Grand Falls Casino and Resort with an individual who had dropped a suspected illegal substance near the golf pro shop. Upon investigation, a Lyon County Deputy arrested Randy E Estrada, age 36, of Sioux Falls, SD for Possession of Controlled Substance – Cocaine 1st offense, a serious misdemeanor, and Possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. Estrada was transported back to the Lyon County Jail where he was booked and released on a $1,300 bond.

On March 25, 2024 the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Michael Bucholz on an active Lyon County warrant for violation of probation. He posted bond and was released. (SW)

ACCIDENT

On Sunday, March 24, 2023, at approximately 10:45 AM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 75 near 170th St.  Joeb Dean Boogerd, age 21, from Hull, IA was southbound in a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup when he lost control due to slush and ice on the roadway.  The Ram entered the east ditch, overturned, and came to a rest on its top.  The Ram was a total loss and Boogerd was cited for failure to maintain control, a simple misdemeanor.

On 3/17/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Martha Gonzalez Leon for Driving While Suspended, No Valid Driver’s License, and Violation of Financial Liability Coverage. Gonzalez Leon was transported to the Lyon County Jail.

On 2/29/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office charged Trevor Walker, of Sioux Falls, SD, with Possession of a Controlled Substance-1st Offense, a serious misdemeanor. Additionally, Walker was cited for Improper Parking in a Handicap Space. The passenger of the vehicle, Sharisse Youngman, also of Sioux Falls, was charged for Possession of a Controlled Substance-1st Offense, a serious misdemeanor, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. On 2/17/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Paxter Medal, 34, of Rock Rapids on an O’Brien County Mittimus. Medal was turned over to a deputy from the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office.(ML)

On 2/15/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s office received a report of a suspicious vehicle near the intersection of 240th St. and Dove Ave. Upon investigation, Rick Keough, of Rock Valley, was arrested on 1 count of operating while Intoxicated First Offense, Possession of Controlled Substance First Offense, and two counts of Driving while License Revoked. Keough was transported to the Lyon County Jail.

ARREST

On 2/14/24, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office investigated a report of a hit and run incident. The reporting party stated that another vehicle had sideswiped them in the 1900 block of Highway 75 around 19:40 pm. Upon investigation, it was determined that Harold Hasche, age 86, of Rock Rapids, failed to stop after hitting another vehicle and was driving while barred. Hasche was arrested and booked into the Lyon County Jail where he has since been released on a $2,000 bond. Hasche was also issued a citation for Hit and Run- Property Damage Only.

On 02/13/2024, Jaime Estenson [43] of Sioux Falls was arrested for Defraud Drug/Alcohol Test 1st Offense, a simple misdemeanor after attempting to use previously dispelled urine at a probation meeting. Estenson was arrested and booked into the Lyon County Jail. (SW)

On February 7, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested 18-year-old Michael Deweerd of Inwood, Iowa.  Deweerd was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. (ML)

Arrest

On February 4, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Ixel Meza, age 20, of Sioux Falls, SD.  The arrest stems from a report of several vehicles that had been entered in the Grand Falls Casino parking lot.  The vehicles had various items taken stolen from inside of them.  After the investigation, Meza was transported to the Lyon County Jail and charged with three counts of third-degree burglary of a motor vehicle, an aggravated misdemeanor.  (SW)

On January 30, 2024 at approximately 9:16 PM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office investigated a two-vehicle accident in George, IA.  Autumn Rylee Voss, age 18, from Little Rock, IA was operating a 2004 Pontiac Vibe westbound on 1st Ave N when she struck a legally parked 2022 Chevrolet owned by Bank Plus.  The Pontiac Vibe was a total loss and the Chevrolet received approximately $2,000 in damages. On January 30, 2024 at approximately 11:38 PM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office investigated a one vehicle accident in Larchwood, IA.  Lina Marie Romero, age 32, from Larchwood, IA was operating her 2017 Ford Fusion northbound on Broadway St when she struck cement landscaping owned by the City of Larchwood.  The 2017 Ford Fusion was a complete loss and the landscaping received approximately $2,000 in damages.  This accident is still under investigation.  (SW)

Arrest

On 2/3/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Troy Fodness, of Alvord, for Driving While Suspended, No Insurance, and Operating Non-Registered Vehicle, all simple misdemeanors. Additionally, Fodness was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-3rd Offense, a Class D Felony, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. The arrest stems from a traffic stop in the 1800 block of 230th Street near Inwood.

Accident

On 01/08/2024, Michael Winter [52] of Rock Rapids was westbound on 3rd Avenue in Rock Rapids driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado. Winter was unable to stop at the stop sign, and he slid through, striking a 2006 Ford F650 driven by Richard Morgan [66] of Sheldon, which was northbound on Union Street. Morgan’s truck sustained approximately $20,000 in damage while Winter’s sustained approximately $5,000. Winter weather was a contributing factor in the accident.(TB)

On 01/08/2024, Paxter Medal [34] of Rock Rapids, was served an arrest warrant for Violation of Probation while incarcerated at the Lyon County Jail. His bond is $1,000 cash or surety.(TB)

ACCIDENT / OWI

On Sunday January 7, 2024 at approximately 1:22 AM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office received a report of a parked car being struck on Fell Steet near Carter Street in Larchwood, IA.  It was discovered that Koleby Joseph Harshfield, age 35, from Larchwood, IA was operating a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer westbound on Fell Street when he struck a 2007 Dodge Ram owned by Aaron Harmon, of Larchwood, IA.  The 2007 Dodge was legally parked on Fell Street.  

As a result, Harshfield was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated 1st Offense, a serious misdemeanor, and failure to maintain control, a simple misdemeanor.  

No injuries were reported and each vehicle received approximately $5,000 in damages.   (LS)

On Sunday December 24, 2023, at approximately 2:40 AM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office received a call from security personnel at the Grand Falls Casino and Resort of a subject that was refusing to leave the property.  As a result, Luis Gerardo Cruz, age 39, from Brandon, SD was arrested for trespassing,  a simple misdemeanor. On 12/14/2023, Anita Parra was arrested for an outstanding warrant. Parra’s warrant was for Violation of Probation, an aggravated misdemeanor. Parra was transported to the Lyon County Jail from the Brookings County, SD jail. Parra’s bond is $2,000 cash or surety.(ML)

12/4/23 David J. Case (47) of Sibley turned himself into the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office for an outstanding warrant. Case was booked into jail and released on bond.

12/6/23 Cody A. Severson (25) of Inwood was arrested for driving while revoked, operating without interlock devise, failure to have SR insurance. Severson was transported and housed in the Lyon County Jail awaiting bond.

On November 30, 2023 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Grand Falls Casino and Golf Resort for a male subject refusing to leave.  As the result Charles Eugene Sigro of Sioux Falls, South Dakota was arrest for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, introducing contraband into correction institution, trespassing, and two valid Lyon County arrest warrants. (ML)

On November 30, 2023 a deputy with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a red 2008 Chrysler 300 on Highway 9 near Jay Ave.  As a result Tara Christine Calligan of Rock Rapids, Iowa was arrested for operating while intoxicated and no proof of insurance. (ML)

A traffic stop was initiated, and Jessy Neth [23] of George was arrested for Operating While Under the Influence. Neth was transported to the Lyon County Jail. (SW)

On 11/18/2023, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Elvin Lopez Melgara of Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Lopez Melgara was charged with Providing False Identification Information, No Valid Driver’s License, No Insurance, and Failure to Obey Stop Sign, all simple misdemeanors. Lopez Melgara was transported to the Lyon County Jail. The arrest stems from a traffic stop in George.

ACCIDENT

On November 17, 2023 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office investigated a single vehicle rollover on Highway 9 between Jackson Ave and Jay Ave.  It was learned that Jose Richarz, of Larchwood, Iowa was operating a 2005 GMC pickup westbound when he entered the left ditch came back onto the road and went off the road towards the right.  The pickup then rolled and came to rest in the field.  The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Lyon County Ambulance.(ML)

On 11/15/2023 at approximately 12:06 am, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office received a report of a vehicle sitting in the middle of the intersection of 220th St and Jay Ave. and that the driver was slumped over. As a result, Nicholas Huff, of Sheldon, was arrested for OWI 1st and Booked at the Lyon County Jail. (TB)

SUSPICIOUS PERSON/VEHICLE

On 11/10/23, around 11:45 PM, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of a suspicious person/vehicle in the 1800 block of Elmwood Avenue. The complainant stated that an unknown person parked in their driveway and approached the house before leaving once the homeowners turned their lights on. The person took off in their vehicle and parked about a half mile north of the residence. A Lyon County Deputy located the vehicle in the 1800 block of Elmwood Avenue. Upon Investigation it was determined that the driver, Grant Michael Mills, age 24, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was under the influence of alcohol and was suspected to have been involved in a recent accident. Mills was arrested for Operation While Intoxicated 1st Offense, Child Endangerment, and issued a citation for Open Container. The accident is still under investigation. Mills was held on a $4,000 Bond.

FIGHT LEADS TO ARRESTS

On 11/11/23, around 11:00 PM, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of active fighting out at the Grand Falls Casino. Upon arrival the Lyon County Sheriff's Deputies, along with Iowa DCI Agents, located the subjects involved. Upon Investigation, a father and son, Francisco Alvarez, age 42, of Sioux Falls, SD and Franscisco Alvarez III, age 22, of Sioux Fall, SD were arrested on charges of Public Intoxication and Disorderly Conduct. Both parties were transported to the Lyon County Jail. During a pat down search of Francisco Alvarez (age 42), a plastic baggy with white crystalline substance consistent with Methamphetamine was located in his front pants pocket. Alvarez (age 42) was then also charged with Possession of Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine.  (LS)

On 11/6/23, around 3pm, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a reckless driver near Rock Rapids driving at a high rate of speed and making unsafe overtakes of motorists. The description of the vehicle that was given, was a White Sedan with no rear bumper. A Lyon County deputy located that vehicle and observed it going at a high rate of speed in which he conducted a traffic stop. Upon investigation, it was determined that the driver, Brock William Ackerman, age 21 of Harrisburg South Dakata, had a Revoked Iowa Driver’s License, No SR-22 Insurance, and no valid South Dakota Driver’s License. Ackerman was also issued a citation for speeding 73/55mph zone. Ackerman was transported to the Lyon County Jail and is held on $2,000 bond. (ML)
