Deputy Sheriff

Lyon County Civil Service Commission, along with the Lyon County Sheriff's Office will be holding a Civil Service Test on April 23, 2024, at 1:00 PM. All interested applicants should pick up an application at the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, 410 S Boone Street, Rock Rapids, IA, 51246, or the application can be found at https://lyoncounty.iowa.gov/sheriff/ Applications must be returned no later than 5:00 PM on April 5, 2024. 

Lyon County offers a competitve wage and benefit package. Starting salary is $73,449 without ILEA certification and $76,587 with ILEA certification. Deputies are assigned a take home patrol pickup/SUV that is equipped with in-car camera, body camera, radar unit, computer, and printer. 

Responsibilities:

-Enforce laws and ordinances to maintain public safety and order

-Patrol assigned areas to prevent and detect criminal activity

-Conduct criminal investigations and gather evidence

-Interview witnesses, victims, and suspects

-Make arrests and process prisoners

-Traffic Enforcement

-Maintain accurate records and prepare detailed reports

-Provide Assistance and Support to other law enforcement agencies

Qualifications:

-High School Diploma or equivalent

-Completion of a certified law enforcement training program (or ability to obtain within a specified time frame)

-Valid driver's license with a clean driving record

-CPR certification (or ability to obtain within a specified time frame)

-Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

-Ability to handle stressful situations with professionalism and composure

-Excellent problem-solving and decision making abilities

-Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

Skills:

-Criminal investigation techniques

-Loss prevention strategies

-Defensive driving skills

-Knowlege of CPR and first aid procedures

-Surveillence techniques

-Report writing skills

-Conflic management and de-escalation techniques

Preffered Skills:

-Experience in law enforcement or military service
