Driver's License

Written and Driving Exams

  • Testing Hours:
    • Written Exams: Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
    • Driving tests: by appointment only
  • Services Provided:
    • Non-Commercial: written exam and driving test
    • Motorcycle: written exam and driving test (weather permitting)
    • Commercial Driver's License: written exam only

REAL ID

  • A REAL ID will be required to fly or enter federal buildings. A valid passport also meets the requirements.
  • The deadline to get your REAL ID (gold star) has been extended to May 7, 2025. To learn more, visit the Iowa Department of Transportation's website. 
  • Required Documents:
    • Certified birth certificate or valid passport
    • Original social security card or document with the full social security number (i.e. W2 or 1099)
    • Two pieces of mail with your name and residential address (no PO Box)
    • Proof of legal name change from birth name (i.e. marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order)
  • A $10 fee is charged if the REAL ID is not issued at the renewal of your driver's license.

Move Into Iowa

  • Driver's License should be transferred within 30 days of moving into the state.
  • Required Documents:
    • Certified birth certificate or valid passport
    • Original social security card or document with full social security number (i.e. W2 or 1099)
    • Two pieces of mail with your name and residential address (no PO Box)
    • Proof of legal name change from birth name (i.e. marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order)

Minors

  • Instruction permit testing must be within 30 days of their 14th birthday, but under 18 years old.
  • Required Documents:
    • Certified birth certificate or valid passport
    • Original social security card or document with full social security number (i.e. W2 or 1099)
    • Parental Consent
  • Students can take the knowledge test at home (Skip The Trip - Iowa DOT):
    • A parent is required to administer the test and will need an electronic device (NOT a phone or tablet) connected to the internet
    • Application to Proctor Knowledge Exam Form must be completed by parent. If approved, an email will be sent with instructions for taking and administering the test
    • After completion of the test, another email will be sent with the test results and instructions

School Permit (optional)

  • To be eligible for a school permit, students must:
    • Hold their learner's permit for 6 months without accidents or citations
    • Complete an Iowa-approved driver education course.
  • Required Documents:
    • Minor School Affidavit signed and completed by the Superintendent, Principal, or School Board Chairperson
    • Current Learner's Permit
    • Parental Consent

Intermediate/Restricted License

  • Requirements:
    • Must complete an Iowa-approved driver education course
    • Must be at least 16 years old, but under 18 years old
    • Must hold an instruction permit for a total of one year and a clean driving record for at least six consecutive months before applying for our intermediate license

    • Current Learner's Permit
    • Parental Consent
