On December 20, 2024 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rollover accident in the 2300 block of US Highway 75.

 

Upon investigation it was determined that Chris Schwartze, of Rock Rapids, was southbound on US Highway 75, in a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, when he swerved to avoid a deer that entered the roadway.  Schwartze lost control of the vehicle, crossed the northbound lane and entered the northbound ditch, causing the vehicle to roll.  The vehicle came to rest on the passenger side.  Schwartze was extricated from the vehicle by Doon Fire and Rescue.  He was then transported to the Avera hospital in Rock Rapids, by Lyon County Ambulance, for treatment of injuries.

On December 17th, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Amanda McDonald, age 52, of Ashton, Iowa.  On December 16th a trespassing complaint was filed by a residence southwest of George, Iowa.  During the investigation it was determined that McDonald had unlawfully entered the complainant's property and caused damage while on the property.  McDonald was arrested for criminal trespass causing damage to property, a serious misdemeanor.

On 12/16/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a 2-vehicle accident at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Lyon Street in Little Rock. Investigation at the scene revealed that Mitchell Groen of Little Rock was operating a 1997 GMC Suburban westbound on Lyon Street. Tonya Arends, of LIttle Rock, was operating her 2011 Lincoln MKX southbound on 2nd Avenue. The Groen vehicle failed to yield the right of way and the two vehicles collided in the intersection. No injuries were reported. Groen was cited for Failure to Yield Right of Way.

On 12/17/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a 3-vehicle accident in Rock Rapids. Investigation at the scene determined that Alexander Minor of Rock Rapids was operating his 2003 Chevy Silverado northbound in the 500 block of S Greene Street. Minor lost control and struck 2 legally parked vehicles on the east side of the road. The first parked vehicle, a 2006 Buick Lucerne, owned by Scott VanAartsen of Rock Rapids sustained functional damage. The second parked vehicle, a 2024 Chevy Trax, owned by Nile Christensen of Rock Rapids, sustained significant damage. No injuries were reported. Minor was cited for Careless Driving and Failure to Maintain Control.

On 12/17/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a 1-vehicle rollover accident in the 3600 block of Iowa Highway 9. Investigation at the scene determined that Conrad Beauvais, of Ellsworth, MN, was operating a 1999 GMC Jimmy eastbound on Highway 9 when he lost control and entered the south ditch. The vehicle then overturned and came to rest on its roof in the adjacent field. Beauvais was extricated by mechanical means and transported to Avera Rock Rapids for treatment of possible injuries. Beauvais was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and No Valid Driver's License. Additionally, a passenger and owner of the vehicle, Alexander Owen, of Ellsworth, MN, was cited for No Insurance-Accident and Defective Tires. Owen was not injured. Assisting at the scene was the Lyon County Ambulance, Rock Rapids Fire Department, and The Tow Co.

On Sunday December 15, 2024 at approximately 6:30 AM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office investigated a one vehicle accident at the intersection of A-34 (210th St) and Highway 75.  Eri Wilder Cellular Argueta, age 24, from Worthington, MN was operating a 2014 Toyota Rav4 owned by Maria Gissela Claros Ramos.  Due to the icy roads the Rav4 went through the T intersection, entered the west ditch, and started on fire.  The driver, and only occupant, was able to exit the vehicle without any injuries.  The Rav4 became fully engulfed in flames and was a total loss.

 

This accident is still under investigation.  The Lyon County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Doon Fire and Rescue Departments, the Lyon County Ambulance, and Trackside Towing.

On 12/12/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Valora DeBruin, of Rock Rapids, on a Sioux County warrant for Contempt of Court. DeBruin was transported to the Lyon County Jail.

On 12/07/24, The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Desiree Wollan of Larchwood for OWI 2nd offense. Wollan was transported and housed in the Lyon County Jail.

On 12/8/2024, William Johnson Jr., 40, of Rock Rapids, was arrested on a Lyon County warrant for 2 counts of  Sex Offender Registry Violation. Johnson was transported to the Lyon County Jail and was released after posting a $4,000 bond.

On 11/27/2024, The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rollover accident in the 1600 block of U.S. 75. Richard Thiner was driving a 2017 Dodge Ram Pickup and lost control of the vehicle. Richard crossed the center line and rolled into the West ditch. Richard and his passenger received no injuries. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Lyon County Ambulance, The Rock Rapids Fire Department, and Tow Co.

On 12/3/2024, The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jamaal Bradford of Sioux Falls South Dakota for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Operating a Motor Vehicle with no Valid Driver’s License. He was transported and housed in the Lyon County Jail.

 

 

On 12/3/2024, The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Daniel Wessels of George for Driving While Revoked, Driving While Suspended, Failure to Provide Financial Proof of Liability, Speed, and Operating a Motor Vehicle with Expired Registration. He was transported and housed in the Lyon County Jail.

  • On 11/27/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a one-vehicle rollover in the 1900 block of US 75. Brecken Heyden of Larchwood was operating a 2002 Ford Ranger northbound on US 75 when he lost control and entered the west ditch. The vehicle sustained disabling damages. Heyden was cited for failing to maintain safety belts.  Assisting at the scene was Lyon County Ambulance, Rock Rapids Fire Department and The Tow Co.

  • On 11/27/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a two-vehicle accident in the 900 block of the alley between Broadway and Carter St. in Larchwood. McCaudis Terry of Sioux Falls was backing his 2017 Freightliner mail truck owned by Lakes Logistics into the Post Office when he struck a parked Chrysler 300 owned by Kent Snyders of Larchwood. Snyders car received minor damage.

  • On 12/03/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested David Burton Jr. of Sioux Falls on a Lyon County warrant for Burglary 3rd Degree, Theft 2nd Degree and Failure to Appear for Violation of Probation. His bond was set at $6,000 cash or surety.

On 11/29/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle accident at 180th Street and Highway 182 near West Lyon. Tilly DeJong [19] of Sioux Center was westbound on 180th when she pulled out from the stop sign in front of Dale Thompson [67] of Primghar. DeJong’s 2011 Ford Escape and Thompson’s 2012 Ford Explorer were both totaled. Thompson received non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance from the scene. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Larchwood Fire Department, Larchwood Emergency Medical Services (LEMS), Lyon County Ambulance, and TrackSide Towing from Alvord.

On 11/24/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office investigated a one-vehicle accident in the 2600 block of 240th Street. Scott Vandekieft of Canton was eastbound with his wife Darcy Techen in their Dodge 3500 before colliding with four cows head-on in the eastbound lane. Scott was uninjured, and one passenger was transported by The Lyon County Ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries. The owner of the cattle was Jason De Weerd of Doon. Doon Rescue, The Lyon County Ambulance, and The Tow Co. assisted the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

On November 23, 2024 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old Brianna Thode of Jasper, Minnesota.  Thode was arrested on a Lyon County arrest warrant for fail to appear.  Her bond was set at $7500 cash or surety.

On 11/19/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Tristan Fraser of Orange City on a Lyon County warrant for Probation Violation on the original charge of OWI 1st Offense. Fraser was inititally arrested by the Sioux County Sheriff's Office before custody was transferred to Lyon County. Fraser posted a $1,000 bond in Lyon County and was released with a court date.

On 11/19/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Mark Kruse, of George, on a Lyon County Mittimus. Additionally, Kruse was also served with a Sioux County warrant for Contempt of Court and an O'Brien County prison mittimus. Kruse was transported to and lodged in the Lyon County Jail.

On Tuesday November 12, 2024 at approximately 8:03 AM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office investigated a one vehicle accident on 190th St half of a mile east of Highway 182. Mckinzie Kay Florey, age 18, from Alvord, IA was operating a 1998 Chevrolet K2500 pickup westbound on 190th St.  The vehicle hit a rough patch in the roadway and the driver lost control, entered the south ditch, and rolled before coming to a rest on it's tires.  Florey and her juvenile passenger were able to exit the vehicle on their own. Florey received minor injuries and the juvenile passenger was transported to Avera Mckennan in Sioux Falls, SD for non-life-threatening injuries. 
The 1998 Chevrolet pickup was a total loss.  The Lyon County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Inwood Fire and Rescue, the Lyon County Ambulance, and Trackside Towing.

Press Release

On 11/6/2024, around 9am, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint near Hwy 9 and Cleveland Ave. Upon investigation, the vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, barring (SD) license plate WAR505, fled the scene and started a high speed pursuit reaching speeds upwards of 117mph. During the course of the pursuit, the driver created multiple driving hazards and made numerous traffic violations. The pursuit ended between Jackson and Jay Avenue along Hwy 9. The driver was then identified as Derek Wayne Vining, age 32 of Brandon SD. Vining was transported to the Lyon County Jail and booked in on the following charges: Theft 1st, a class C Felony, Eluding, a class D Felony, Operation without Owner’s Consent, a Aggravated Misdemeanor, and citations for Speed(117/55), Failure to Yield half of Roadway, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, Unsafe Passing, Unsafe Stopping on Highway. Vining also had a active warrant out of Lyon County for Probation Violation and was issued that as well. Vining currently has a $18,000 bond. Additional charges are pending further investigation.

On 10/23/2024 the Lyon County Sheriff's Office Responded to a call of a 2-vehicle accident in front of West Lyon School. Jerry Feucht of Larchwood was operating his 2017 Ford Escape southbound on Hwy 182 when he slowed to turn into West Lyon. At the same time a 2004 Chevy Silverado being operated by Levi Altena approached from the rear. Altena failed to slow in time and collided with the rear of the Escape. This caused minor damage to the Escape and disabling damage to the Silverado. All parties involved were treated for injuries and discharged on scene. They Lyon County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Larchwood Fire and EMS and Lyon County Ambulance.

On 10/29/2024 the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a 2-vehicle accident in the 2100 block of Hwy 9. Upon investigation it was found that a 2007 Chevy Impala being operated by Zoe Kellenberger and a 2023 Subaru Forster being operated by Paul Reemtsma, were in a line of multiple vehicles traveling eastbound on Hwy 9. While traveling in the 2100 Blk, the front vehicle slowed from hitting a dog in the roadway. This, in turn, caused the entire line of vehicles to slow. The Impala was unable to slow intime and struck the rear of the Subaru. This caused minor damage to the Subaru and disabling damage to the Impala. Reemtsma and his wife were transported to Avera in Rock Rapids where they were treated for their injuries and released. Kellenberger was treated and released on scene. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Lester Fire and Rescue, Lyon County Ambulance, The Iowa State Patrol, and Trackside Towing.

On Thursday October 31, 2024 the Lyon County Sheriff's Office was called to the 700 block of S Union St in Rock Rapids, for a two-vehicle accident. Evan Meinerts, of Luverne, operating a Buick Century, was traveling South, failed to yield while turning left into a parking lot striking a vehicle driven by Jason Van Otterloo, of Hull. Van Otterloo, operating a Ford F350, was traveling North. Both Vehicles were towed due to damages. Meinerts was transported to Avera Hospital for minor injuries. Meinerts was cited for failure to yield while making a left hand turn. Assisting agencies on the scene were Lyon County Ambulance, Rock Rapids Fire Department and The Tow Co.

October 25, 2024, at 7:30 AM, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a car-deer accident near the intersection of 180th Street and Beech Ave. Brooke D. Rozeboom (33) of Rock Valley was operating a 2021 Chevy Traverse west on 180th and struck a deer that entered the roadway. No injuries were reported. Rozeboom’s vehicle sustained approximately $8000.00 dollars damage.

October 24, 2024, at 7:59, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a car deer accident near Lake Pahoja on 180th Street. Luis Gustavo Soto Lopez was operating a 2020 Mazda CX-5 east bound and struck a deer that entered the road from the north ditch. No injuries were reported and the vehicle sustained approximately $3000.00 dollars in damage. Lopez was cited for not having a valid driver’s license.

On 10/13/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Javier Arteaga, 47, of Sioux Falls, SD, for 2 counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine and marijuana), Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Open Container, and No Valid Driver's License. Arteaga posted a $7,000 bond and was released. Additionally, Lori Perez, 32, of Sioux Falls, SD, was arrested for Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, Possession of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Perez is being held on a $5,000 cash/surety bond.

On 10/3/2024, The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jed Desmet for Driving while Barred, Fugitive from Justice, Driving While Suspended for Non-Payment of Iowa Fines, Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Registration, Driving While Suspended for Failure to File SR-22 Insurance, and Failure to Provide Insurance. Jed also had two active South Dakota Warrants that were extraditable. He was transported and held in the Lyon County Jail.

On Friday October 4, 2024 at approximately 5:15 AM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office was called to the Grand Falls Casino and Resort for a two-vehicle accident. Upon investigation it was discovered that Kimberly Lourdes Guerra, age 28, from Sioux Falls, SD was operating a 2015 Buick Encore out of a parking spot when she struck a 2021 Kia sedan being driven by Brenda Vela, age 59, from Sioux Falls, SD.  Guerra then drove through the parking lot before stopping on Grand Falls Blvd.

As a result, Guerra was arrested for operating while intoxicated, 1st offense, a serious misdemeanor; failure to have a valid driver's license, a simple misdemeanor; failure to provide security against liability-accident related, a simple misdemeanor; and operating a non registered vehicle, a simple misdemeanor.

The 2021 Kia received approximately $5,500 in damages and the 2105 Buick received approximately $2,000 in damages.

On September 29, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Jose Vasquez of Little Rock, Iowa.  Jose was arrested following an assault complaint filed by a member of his household.  As a result of the this arrest, Jose was charged with Domestic assault simple, a simple misdemeanor and lodged in the Lyon County Jail.

On 9/27/2024, The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of IA 9 and Indian Ave. The collision was between a Chrysler Town and Country minivan and a 4-door Chevy Silverado. The driver of the Town and Country minivan was Eli Horstman, and the driver of the Chevy Silverado was Ramon Garcia Gutierrez. Horstman was southbound on Indian Ave. and slowed at the stop sign at the intersection with IA 9 before pulling out and colliding with Gutierrez who was eastbound on IA 9. Neither party sustained any injuries. Assisting agencies on the scene were Lyon County Ambulance, Rock Rapids Fire Department, The Tow Co, Iowa State Patrol, and Iowa DOT. Horstman was cited for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way.

On 9/26/2024 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a 2-vehicle accident at the intersection of 140th St. and Beech Ave. Upon investigation it was found that Lance Haugen of Glendive MT. was operating his 2012 Ford Raptor Northbound on Beech Ave. when he failed to stop at the stop sign. Upon entering the intersection, he struck a 2021 Chevy Travers being operated by Marvin Winkle of George IA. The Front of the Ford made contact with the passenger side of the Chevy and sent them into the northeast ditch. The ford rolled before coming to rest on the passenger side. The Chevy came to rest on a field driveway where it caught fire. Of the 6 total occupants between the 2 vehicles, 1 was airlifted to Avera Sioux Falls while the other 5 were transported by ground EMS to Avera and Sanford Sioux Falls. The investigation into what caused the accident is still ongoing. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Larchwood Fire and EMS, Lyon County Ambulance, Sanford Air Med, and Trackside Towing.

 

A very special thanks and recognition needs to go out to Off Duty Lennox PD officer Ismael Small, who went above and beyond the call of duty when he came across the accident seconds after it occurred. Small leapt into action and pulled 4 occupants out of a burning vehicle as well as pulled 1 occupant out of an overturned vehicle. Small stayed on scene with the injured parties and rendered care until emergency medical services arrived. Even after emergency services arrived Small stayed on scene to assist with patient care. It is without a doubt that the heroic actions of Small saved the lives of all parties involved in the accident.

    On 9/26/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office was asked to assist the Lyon County Ambulance for a call at 1202 S 3rd Ave Apt 212 in Rock Rapids. During the course of assistance, it was determinded that an assault had taken place. An investigation then followed and William Stewart Johnson, JR, age 40, of Rock Rapids was arrested for Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injuries, a class D Felony. Johnson JR was transported to the Lyon County Jail and held on a $5,000 bond. Iowa State Patrol also assisted in this matter.

On September 26, at approx. 3:44 PM. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a 2 vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwy. 9 and Coolidge Ave. Upon investigation it was found that Mitchel Claussen of Rock Valley, was operating a Silage truck that was stopped waiting to turn south onto Coolidge from Hwy 9. While doing so a 2015 Dodge ram that was being operated by Sandra Ocampo Gutierrez of Hawarden, approached from the rear. The Ram rear ended the truck causing no damage to the truck and totaling the Ram. Sandra and an adult passenger were treated for minor injuries on scene and released. The vehicle was towed away. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Lester Fire and Rescue, Lyon County Ambulance, and The Tow Co.

On 9/19/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident at the intersection of 140th St. and Adams Ave. The collision was between a semi with a trailer and a GMC Terrian SUV. The driver of the semi was Jay Bent, and the driver of the GMC Terrian was Ricarlene Agenor The semi and trailer are owned by Metro Construction Inc. Bent was eastbound on 140th St when he slowed to make a right-hand turn on Adams Ave. to head south. Bent went into the westbound lane of 140th St. to make the turn with his trailer.  Agenor was behind Jay heading eastbound on 140th St. and collided with the side of Bent’s trailer while he was turning. Neither party sustained any injuries.

On 9/18/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Jose Jorge Richarz on a Lyon County warrant for Violation of Probation.  Jose was transported from the Plymouth County Jail to the Lyon County Jail. He was housed at the Lyon County Jail with a $2,000 cash or surety bond.

On September 4th, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle rollover accident.  The investigation revealed that Laurel Krull, of Rock Rapids, was southbound on K52 in a 2007 Mazda CX-9.  Krull failed to negotiate a curve, lost control of the vehicle, and rolled.  The vehicle came to rest on it’s roof in the northbound ditch.  The Rock Rapids fire department and Lyon County Ambulance were also on scene. On 8/27/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Roberto Duron Escobar of Larchwood. Escobar was arrested on an active Lyon County warrant issued by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The warrant was for Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. Escobar was transported to the Lyon County Jail where he later posted bond a $5,000 bond and was released.

On 08/26/24, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested Rose Stafford of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Stafford was arrested for Driving While Revoked. Stafford was transported and housed at the Lyon County Jail.

On 8/17/2024 at 01:20 a Lyon County Deputy conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 block of Kennedy Avenue for an Equipment Violation. A probable cause investigation took place and as a result, Joseph Renken [21] of Sibley, IA was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated-1st Offense. Renken was transported to the Lyon County Jail.

On 8/17/2024 at approximately 03:00, our office received a 911 call of a motor vehicle accident in the 4100 block of 210th St east of George. Preliminary Investigation determined that Jenna Jungers [17] of Sheldon, IA was operating a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound on 210th St when it left the roadway and rolled in the ditch. Jungers and a juvenile passenger were transported to local hospitals by ambulance with serious non-life threatening injuries. The vehicle was determined to be a total loss and the investigation is ongoing. Assisting at the scene was George Fire Department, George EMS, Lyon County Ambulance, and The Tow Co.

On 8/15/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Cody Severson, 26, of Inwood. Severson was arrested on a Lyon County warrant for Failure to Appear on the original charge of Driving While Revoked. Additionally, Severson was charged with new charges of Driving While Revoked (OWI test failure), serious misdemeanor, and driving while suspended, a simple misdemeanor.

On Sunday August 11, 2024 at approximately 1:30 AM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of a domestic assault in progress at a residence in Doon, IA.  Deputies responded and after an on-scene investigation Joshua Jeffrey Van Schepen, age 28, from Doon, IA was arrested for Domestic Assault Impeding Airflow, a class D Felony.

On 8/4/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kaden Schrader, 22, of Sheldon for OWI 1st Offense, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Speeding. Schrader was transported to the Lyon County Jail. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

On 8/3/2024 at around 01:30am, a Lyon County Deputy was near the area of E Indiana Ave and S Lincoln St in George when he observed two individuals in the George School playground. After attempting to make contact with the individuals, both fled on foot. Following the incident, it was discovered that Alexis Wunder [18] of Spencer, IA was under the influence of alcohol. Wunder was arrested for Public Intoxication and Interference with Official Acts, she was transported to the Lyon County Jail. At the Lyon County Jail, Wunder resisted officers and became physically aggressive. After doing so, Wunder was also charged with Interference with a Correctional Officer [Assault] and Assault on Persons Engaged in Certain Occupations. Minor injuries were reported. Wunder is held on a $2,000 bond.

On 08/02/2024, Lyon County Deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 9 on the east side of Rock Rapids. A 2014 Ford Focus being driven by Joanna Hash [31] of Rock Rapids was eastbound on Highway 9. Her vehicle was struck by a 1999 Yamaha motorcycle being driven by male juvenile. The Rock Rapids Fire Department and Lyon County Ambulance also responded to the scene. The juvenile was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On 08/01/2024, Lyon County Deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident in the 1300 block of Harding Ave. Consuelo Benavides [61] of Rock Rapids was northbound on Harding in her 2020 GMC Terrain when she was struck by a turning vehicle, initially traveling southbound. That vehicle was a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban being driven by Peter Almas [52] of Sioux Falls. Almas was issued two citations. Both vehicles had disabling damage, and one individual was transported to the hospital for further evaluation. Other responding units included the Rock Rapids Fire Department, Lyon County Ambulance, and The Tow Co.

On 7/30/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office investigated a 2 vehicle accident in the 1400 block of Chestnut Avenue of rural Larchwood. Preliminary investigation determined that Ella Sammons, 16, of Steen, MN, was southbound in a 2012 Buick Regal when she struck a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle, owned and operated by Caleb Meyer of Hull. Meyer was transported to receive treatment of his injuries. The Buick received disabling damage and the motorcycle was determined to be a total loss. The investigation is ongoing. Assisting at the scene was the Larchwood Fire Department, Larchwood EMS, Lyon County Ambulance, the Iowa State Patrol, and Erwin’s Towing.

On 07/25/2024, Lyon County Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident at the intersection of Ironwood Ave and 210 Street West of George. Jason Samuels of Sioux Falls was attempting to turn south on Ironwood Avenue when his trailer tires entered the southwest ditch, causing the trailer attached to his semi to tip over. The trailer was hauling grain, which had to be vacuumed out of the ditch. The truck and trailer were owned by Idlenot Farms of Larchwood. No injuries were reported, and the truck and trailer were towed by Trackside Towing of Alvord.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep was chosen by the Iowa D.A.R.E. Association as the 2024 D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year. Sheriff Vander Stoep has been teaching the program in Lyon County since 1995 and will be starting his 29th year this fall. He was presented this award in Dubuque, Iowa at the Iowa D.A.R.E. On 7/24/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Justin Fastert, of Rock Rapids, on 2 Lyon County warrants for Fraudulent Practices-1st Degree (Class C Felony) and Insurance Fraud (Class D Felony). Fastert was transported to the Lyon County Jail where he posted a $15,000 surety bond and was released. The case was investigated by the Iowa Insurance Fraud Bureau.

On 7/16/2024 at approximately 11:30 pm, a Lyon County Deputy conducted a Traffic Stop near the intersection of IA 9 and US 75 East of Rock Rapids. During the stop, the Deputy detected a strong odor of narcotics emitting from the vehicle, resulting in a search of the vehicle. Following the search, Cody Mowery [28] of Spencer, IA was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance - Marijuana(1st Offense), Possession of a Controlled Substance - Cocaine (First Offense), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Mowery was transported to the Lyon County Jail where he was held on a $1,000 bond.

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, at approximately 10:36 PM, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car accident in the 1900 blk of Dove Ave. Upon investigation it was found that Diego Garcia-Perez, of Rock Valley, was driving a 2018 GMC Sierra southbound on Dove Ave. The vehicle entered the South ditch and struck a culvert. Garcia-Perez managed to reverse the vehicle away from the culvert before the vehicle became inoperable on the front lawn of 1945 Dove Ave.  

Of the 4 total occupants, the 2 rear seat passengers were transported to Avera Hospital in Rock Rapids by Lyon County Ambulance, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. Garcia-Perez and the front seat passenger were medically cleared on scene.

The GMC Sierra was deemed a total loss valued at $30,000, and towed off scene.

Garcia-Perez was arrested for operating while intoxicated 1st offense, and failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle. Garcia-Perez was transported to the Lyon County Jail and booked on those charges.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Alvord Fire and Rescue, Lyon County Ambulance, and Trackside Towing.

On July 4, 2024, at approximately 11:36 PM the Lyon County Sheriff's Office investigated a one vehicle accident on Larch Ave near 170th St.  Xander John Ditsworth, age 20, from Rock Rapids, IA was operating a 2014 Jeep Patriot southbound on Larch Ave south of 170th St.  Ditsworth went around a road closed barricade thinking it was passable.  The road and bridge approach south of this intersection were completely washed away due to recent flooding.  The 2014 Jeep became airborne over the void, struck the bridge, and fell into the creek below where it came to a rest.  The Jeep became mostly submerged in the creek, but all three occupants were able to escape. 

Ditsworth and his two passengers were transported to Avera Medical Group in Rock Rapids by the Little Rock Ambulance where one patient was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. 

The 2014 Jeep was a complete loss valued at approximately $9,000.  Ditsworth was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device, a simple misdemeanor.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Little Rock Ambulance, the Little Rock Fire Department, the Iowa State Patrol, and Trackside Towing.

On July 3rd, 2024, a Lyon County Deputy arrested Mariah Buus, age 23, of rural Little Rock on her active warrants. Warrants were requested for Animal Neglect-Serious bodily injury, an aggravated misdemeanor and Rabbies Vaccine Violation, a simple misdemeanor. Buus did turn herself in and was able to post bond of $2500.

On July 1, 2024, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle accident in the 200 block of South Marshall Street in Rock Rapids.  Nancy Everitt, of Rock Rapids, was southbound on Marshall street in a 2018 Jeep Cherokee.  Everitt moved to the right within her lane to allow a northbound vehicle to pass by.  In doing so, Everitt’s vehicle struck the rear of a diagonally parked and unattended 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owned by Scott Smith, of Rock Rapids.  Damage to the 2018 Jeep is estimated at $3000.  Damage to the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado is estimated to be $5000. On 6/26/24, Brandon Marrow [26] of Rison, AR was southbound on 182 Hwy driving a 2021 Mack Dumptruck when he attempted to make left turn into a farmplace just north of Inwood. Matthew Blom [22] of Inwood was also southbound on 182 Hwy driving a 2021 Dodge Pickup with a load of cattle. Blom was passing Marrow when Marrow turned, and the two vehicles struck, landing in the east ditch. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $20,000 each. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Inwood Fire and Rescue and TrackSide Services of Alvord. There were no injuries to occupants or livestock.

🚨🚨🚨DRINKING WATER ADVISORY 🚨🚨🚨

The Rock Rapids Municipal Water Department is recommending to use bottled water or an alternative source for drinking or cooking.

The Rock Rapids Water Supply has been affected by flood waters. Due to the potential for bacterial contamination, it is being recommended that bottled water or an alternative source be used for drinking and cooking.

For more information, please contact Jennifer Wippert, General Manager, at 515-809-2567. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791.

When the system resumes normal operations, bacteria samples will be collected. This advisory is a precaution until bacterial sample results are available. You will be notified when the results are available and the advisory is lifted.

The system is working with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to resolve the situation.

On 06/21/2024 at approximately 6:00 AM, Alexis Monschein [44] of Rock Rapids was driving a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder through the parking lot of Rosewood Heights when she struck a 1985 Chevy G30 Camper and a 2012 Honda Odessey. Monschein was charged with No Valid Driver’s License and Reckless Driving. The total damage to the Pathfinder was approximately $5,500. Damage for the Camper is estimated at $12,000 and $8,000 for the Odessey.

The US National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has informed us that we expect about 2-5 more inches of rain overnight. They expect the river to crest at 25.3 ft between 7-8 am tomorrow in Rock Rapids which is just below the record of 27 ft. We expect heavy rain at around 8pm tonight and severe weather from 5-10 pm. Plans for shelter are being made and will be made available if needed. Sheriff Vander Stoep advises to use caution when traveling, but especially after 8pm. We are expecting numerous roads to go underwater during the overnight, so we are asking everyone to not travel unless necessary. If you know people who are in areas that may be at risk of flooding, please reach out to them and make sure they have an evacuation plan.

TRAIN DERAILMENT

Last night at around 4:30am the Sheriff's Office was notified of a train derailment involving 9 train cars near 220th St and Elmwood Ave, near Alvord. At this time, the derailment is believed to be caused by flood water, and no hazardous materials were spilled or involved. BNSF is working on cleaning up the area.
